Another car repair, another dollar

January 28, 2008 at 2:27 pm 3 comments

We’ve had to replace the brakes on our car in the last few months, and now, we’re about to spend a bit more to fix an oil leak that’s been getting worse as the days go by. We’ve been told that it could be either a gasket, which would run about $60-$70, or the oil intake, which is substantially more.

We’ve debated whether to fix the car or buy another one. But, a quick look at our savings, our best option is to simply fix the car. This would give us more time to increase the savings in the car replacement fund. Why not go out an buy a car? I can answer that easily, we don’t borrow money. We’re paying cash for our next car.

The good thing in all of this is that we have the money to fix the car. We’ve known the car has it’s issues, so we’ve been putting money aside each month for car repairs. The crappy thing is most of that will go to fix the car. But, the best part is that we’re not incurring any debt. And that is priceless.

    🙂 we just spent $1100 dollars to get everything fixed in one day. The guy was like, “Uhm.. you’re not going to like what I’m going to tell you.” and then he proceeded to give me the itemized list. Then he said, “The brakes are the most critical. You can do the other stuff another time.”

    I said, “I don’t have time to come back. Just do it all.”
    He said, “Uh…are you sure, it’s $1100?”

    I said, “Don’t I get my [Company] discount?”

    “uh yea… it’s $100 less.”
    I could hear him staring at his phone *blink, blink*

    “I don’t have time. Do it all. I’ll pay you in full today.”

    6 hours later, I paid for it and drove away.

    Money = Time
