Over the course of the last few weeks, we’ve been covering tips and suggestions to help future college students and their parents prepare for school. This post is going to cover the top 10 ways to save money while school is in session.

10 Ways to Save
(from 10 Things You Gotta Know about Your First Year of College, Spark Publishing)

1. Coffee
If you have to have your cup of java each morning, think about purchasing a coffee maker and brewing your own. This cost is mere pennies compared to your favorite coffee joint that can put a strain on your wallet.

2. Phone calls
Most cellular plans have discounted times and days throughout the week. Mainly evenings and weekends. Keep that in mind when you dial your mom or dad, or your boy/girlfriend back home.

3. Campus events
Most campus events include free food and drinks.

4. Movies
If possible, buy some snacks and drinks before you get to the movie theatre and bring them in with you.

5. Sales
If you absolutely have to have something that costs a pretty penny, wait until it goes on sale.

6. Used books
Students have saved lots of money by buying used textbooks. If you’re bookstore doesn’t have them or the ones you need, try buying them online.

7. Smoking
If you smoke, the best piece of advice is to stop. Cigarettes aren’t cheap and that’s not changing any time soon.

8. Food
Try eating at all-you-can-eat buffets when you go out. Be warned: the freshman fifteen is not a myth.

9. Garage sales
Try shopping at garage sales before retail stores when you need something. Don’t go just to browse or you’ll buy things you don’t need.

10. Used clothing
Secondhand clothing is not only cheap but it can be stylish as well. Remember that you can negotiate for better prices also.

Next time, we’ll talk about great part-time jobs for college students.
